May is Trauma Awareness Month

Trauma Awareness Month is an opportunity to provide consumers with information and education regarding trauma, its impact and appropriate support for those that have been affected.

Most people will experience at least one traumatic event over the course of their lives. Traumatic events involve exposure to death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence. This can occur through direct exposure of the event, by witnessing the event, learning about the event happening to a close friend or relative or through indirect exposure to the aversive details of the event1. The latter is common for first responders, journalists, lawyers, etc.

While some people may quickly recover following a traumatic event, others may continue to have difficulties for months or years after experiencing a trauma. There are different factors, such as trauma type and age, that can impact whether someone is more likely to recover vs. continue to struggle with post-trauma symptoms.
